Sarah regularly goes to lunch with a clique of well-known gossips. Consequently, she has been labeled as one herself. Why does this come as a surprise? It’s not only human nature--you can count on being evaluated by others based on the company you keep. After all, people with high standards tend to seek each other out, while those with negative outlooks are comfortable commiserating with fellow pessimists.
Savvy employees live at peace with coworkers and avoid unnecessary conflicts. Teddy Roosevelt said, "The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people." Career expert and author Kathy Sanborn adds, “People who get along with their coworkers and boss are the 'golden' ones -- they have the Midas touch!”

Being “Me-Focused” Rather than “Company-Focused”
Sarah does a great job looking out for “Number One." She has a nasty tendency to claim personal credit for team efforts. During crunch times, she leaves promptly at 5:00 while others stay late to get the job done. After all, she has a busy social life! To make matters worse, her competitiveness is not well controlled. When she perceives that fellow employees are outshining her, she subtly begins attempts to discredit them. You can bet her coworkers notice and do not appreciate her actions.
To ensure career advancement, your focus must be finding ways to help your company instead of benefiting or promoting yourself. Don't be overly preoccupied with whether or not you are getting everything you deserve. It shows you have a very narrow viewpoint. You are much more likely to realize career advancement and personal satisfaction with a big picture mindset.

Displaying Unreliable Behavior
It is not unusual for Sarah to be a few minutes late to work. To make matters worse, she has missed a couple of key deadlines recently. Of course, she always has a “good excuse”—it’s never her fault! Sarah fails to realize that dependability is a fundamental foundation of career success.

You can be the hardest worker in the company, but if people cannot rely on your promises, you won't be respected. Reliability is a cornerstone of not only career success but also your reputation in general. Punctuality and regular attendance are key indicators of a responsible employee. Let your word be your bond. If you commit to something, make sure it happens.

Failing to “Know Thyself”
Sarah allowed the dollar signs in her eyes to dim her vision of a suitable career. Had she conducted an honest self-inventory, she would have realized that accounting is an awkward fit for her high energy, sociable personality.

According to Career Coach Pat Kendall, lack of self-knowledge is a common career blunder. “Most people don't know what their strengths and motivated skills are... but if they hope to have a fulfilling career, this is critical,” Kendall frequently encounters college students getting ready to graduate who have no clue what kinds of jobs they can qualify for. “Effective career planning (in the real world) must incorporate three things: personality strengths, job target "viability," and job market /industry trDends.”

Most college career centers have tools and counselors to help college students identify what jobs would be the best fit for their strengths, motivated skills, education and experience. Be sure to take advantage of all the resources your career center has to offer.
